Mending Wall

Mending Wall Wines

The name Mending Wall comes from the Robert Frost poem about two neighbors who meet once a year to restore the boundary that separates them, the boundary that brings them together.

Our winemaking philosophy follows a similar path. Mending Wall is about coming together to explore and question the established boundaries in winemaking. Here, we’re free to experiment and play. No longer constrained by space, time or rules about what should and what should not go into a bottle.

2016 Tournahu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Tournahu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

For as heralded a vintage as 2015 was, by almost every measure, 2016 was better. The crop load returned to normal, which afforded us the hang time we covet and Mother Nature cooperated with long, warm days that gave us the opportunity to pick without concern for anything but ideal conditions. Napa Valley 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

The vintage delivered the perfect amount of sunlit warm days and cool nights that allowed this wine to retain its acidity and mingle with the tannin to deliver a structured and full bodied 100% Cabernet. Peeking through the baked blueberry and ripe plum are just hints of clove oil. On the palate the wine presents a plush, refined texture carrying notes of blueberry, blackberry and currant with an earthy lift. A bit of a show off now, its youthful exuberance will age gracefully for years to come.

Napa Valley 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

One of things we are most proud of around here is the growth and development of the Napa Cabernet program. Each new vintage takes the best aspects of the previous and improves upon them. The 2016 Napa takes that step and then some, it would be safe to say we feel this is the best iteration of this wine to date. The 2016 Mending Wall Napa Cabernet Sauvignon has a bright juicy shell that gives way to a deep, dark core of blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate. A wine not to be missed.

Napa Valley 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

With this vintage we aimed for a wine that showed power, depth, grace and accessibility. In the glass, the wine displays a dark sanguine core with a ruby rim.  The aromatic notes play lightly in the glass emanating notes of spiced plum, eucalyptus, crushed blueberries, and cocoa powder.  The palate experience is where this wine really shines.  Notes of kirsch liqueur, clove, cedar, fresh leather, and currant all exist harmoniously making a profile that is fruit focused with a complimentary spicy earth component.  This wine is easy to enjoy today and will benefit from a few years in the cellar, ready for a special occasion in the future.

2017 Mortar & Stone

Mortar & Stone 2017

We have waited several years for the stars to align so we could let the Petite Sirah dominate this blend with Zinfandel. In 2017 they did! Power and complexity drive this wine forward. These are just two of the many virtues afforded by the unique characteristics of this harvest season. Petite Sirah from the Palisades Vineyard plays the starring role in this edition of Mortar & Stone.

Those who have become familiar with the alluring structure and lightly peppered blue fruit notes will no doubt be further enticed by the layered nuances of blackberry from the Zinfandel. A balanced and approachable wine now with hints of the reward to come for those who allow a bit more age for this one.

2018 Brown Ranch Chardonnay

Brown Ranch Chardonnay 2018

We continue to be amazed by the quality of fruit produced from this vineyard site. A quarter of a century on, the Brown Ranch delivers balanced, beautifully formed clusters that have been sculpted by the gently rolling Carneros landscape aided by its close proximity to the cooling influences of San Pablo Bay.

Fragrant aromas of a farmer’s market fruit basket with highlights of peeled sweet peach and ripe pear give way to a roundness on the palate with creamy tropical fruit and a subtle hint of richness from aging on the lees in French oak barrels. An exceptionally balanced wine.

2017 Stone on Stone

Stone on Stone 2017

To retain acidity and preserve the mouthwatering nature of the wine, malolactic fermentation is blocked. We favor a more grassy, steely profile in the style of white Bordeaux, and are excited to present the first vintage of this wine aged 100% in stainless steel. The Semillon brings an appealing fleshiness to the blend, lending the palate a sleek viscosity that the Sauvignon Blanc frames with nicely integrated acid and minerality.

Because we take a hands-off approach to winemaking, you may notice natural tartrate crystals forming at low temperatures in this unmanipulated wine. We recommend storing it at cellar temperature, and suggest refrigeration two hours before serving.
