Mending Wall

Mending Wall Wines

The name Mending Wall comes from the Robert Frost poem about two neighbors who meet once a year to restore the boundary that separates them, the boundary that brings them together.

Our winemaking philosophy follows a similar path. Mending Wall is about coming together to explore and question the established boundaries in winemaking. Here, we’re free to experiment and play. No longer constrained by space, time or rules about what should and what should not go into a bottle.

2016 Tournahu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Tournahu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

For as heralded a vintage as 2015 was, by almost every measure, 2016 was better. The crop load returned to normal, which afforded us the hang time we covet and Mother Nature cooperated with long, warm days that gave us the opportunity to pick without concern for anything but ideal conditions. The 2016 Mending Wall Tournahu Cabernet Sauvignon takes everything we loved about the 2015 and amplifies it. The midpalate has wonderful depth and power, while the ripe, fine tannins provide structure and length without being obvious or drying. Accessible now with a few hours in the in decanter, this wine has composition to age gracefully for at least a decade or more.

Napa Valley 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

This is a wine that shows everything Napa Valley has to offer in one of its most outstanding vintages of the last 20 years. On the nose woven aromas of sunbaked leather, allspice, cigar wrapper, graphite and anise emerge from the glass in intricate layers. Notes of blackberry compote, crushed rock, cocoa nib, lavender oil, and burnt ends swirl and play off each other as the wine moves from the front to the back of the palate.

Napa Valley 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

With this vintage we aimed for a wine that showed power, depth, grace and accessibility. In the glass, the wine displays a dark sanguine core with a ruby rim.  The aromatic notes play lightly in the glass emanating notes of spiced plum, eucalyptus, crushed blueberries, and cocoa powder.  The palate experience is where this wine really shines.  Notes of kirsch liqueur, clove, cedar, fresh leather, and currant all exist harmoniously making a profile that is fruit focused with a complimentary spicy earth component.  This wine is easy to enjoy today and will benefit from a few years in the cellar, ready for a special occasion in the future.

2014 Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah

Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah 2014

Petite Sirah is first and foremost about tannin. It’s ever present but the quality of it is really what unlocks the enjoyment of the wine. We feel this Palisades site in Calistoga is one of the best PS vineyards in California. This wine possesses a glass-coating deep purple hue that you would be hard pressed to even shine a light through. The real excitement starts with the aromas, however. Spearmint, tobacco leaf, black currant, anise, sandalwood and mashed apricots emerge in concert so layered that even the slightest shift of your nose brings new notes to the forefront. The palate is very balanced with notes of flint, blackberries, black tea, beef blood, coupled with lighter notes of violets, lavender oil and orange zest. The finish on this wine is extremely drawn out leaving you with plenty of opportunity to revel in the dark complexity that lingers for close to a minute.

2015 Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah

Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah 2015

What can one say about this wine that hasn’t already been said? The Palisades Vineyard is truly one of the finest sites in all of California for Petite Sirah and in vintage 2015 the resulting wine is truly exceptional. Like the previous iterations, the wine pours dark as night into the glass however this book is not to be judged by its cover. Aromatically it shows white flowers and blackberries, while the first taste will reveal a savory, well balanced attack of red fruit, spice and hints of game. Drink now with food or age it out 20 years, it will be hard to miss the window on this one.

2015 Mortar & Stone

Mortar & Stone 2015

The second coming of Mortar & Stone is a revelation.

The Zinfandel from high atop Atlas Peak is robust, showy mountain fruit. Vines in the historic Mountain Peak vineyard produce some of the most impressive berries we’ve seen in this varietal, nicely structured and spicy rather than super jammy. That spice component pairs beautifully with the final vintage of our estate Syrah. Once again, the venerable Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah completes the blend, lending tannic backbone and deep, black color.

It has a seductive appeal—dark, sultry, moody in the very best ways—with good balance between earthy inputs and luscious fruit notes.

2016 Brown Ranch Chardonnay

Brown Ranch Chardonnay 2016

Emerging from the dense tunnel of redwoods that marks the entrance to the renowned Brown Ranch Vineyard, your eye follows the swoop and rise of lush hills, rolling to the horizon in all directions. These quintessential Carneros hillsides were cultivated and first planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay by Saintsbury in 1992.

Some two decades later, we are thrilled to present the inaugural Mending Wall Chardonnay from this prized fruit. Moderate temperatures throughout the 2016 growing season coupled with the cooling influence of the San Pablo Bay produced a wine with bracing acidity and good minerality.

This first Mending Wall vintage from Brown Ranch fruit is a more angular Chardonnay in shape and mouth feel, while holding true to form with a rich fruit quality at the core.  Aging on the lees in French oak brings out the wine’s creamy richness and depth of flavor. A truly mouthwatering introduction!

2016 Stone on Stone

Stone on Stone 2016

The Sauvignon Blanc once again comes from Calistoga.

To retain acidity and preserve the mouthwatering nature of the wine, malolactic fermentation is blocked. We favor a more grassy, steely profile in the style of white Bordeaux, and are excited to present the first vintage of this wine aged 100% in stainless steel. The Semillon brings an appealing fleshiness to the blend, lending the palate a sleek viscosity that the Sauvignon Blanc frames with nicely integrated acid and minerality.
